Clontarf Win the U13 Irish Waterpolo Cup 2016

Clontarf Waterpolo Club won the U13 Irish Cup last weekend. The tournament started on Saturday 16th April with 18 teams involved for 2 days of action packed waterpolo. Clontarf entered two teams into the competition, Clontarf United were in a group with a strong North Dublin team and Tribes Claddagh. North Dublin won both their games and Clontarf United won against Tribes Claddagh in a very tight game winning 2 goals to 1. In the other group the other Clontarf team were up against Grads and Claremorris winning both games. The two teams progressed to the second group stages on Sunday, the Clontarf United team had two games against St. Vincents and Kells loosing both games. This knocked them out of the competition but for the majority of the players in the United team this was their first time in a Cup competition and they had a great time over the two days. Meanwhile our other team progressed steadily through the second group stage winning against Tribes and Guinness to gain a place in the Semi Final against Clonard. Clontarf won against Clonard who got to into the semi final after a tense penalty shoot out against Drogheda. In the other Semi Final Corrib A won against St. Vincent’s. The final was set, Corrib v Clontarf, the game started off with Clontarf scoring first and stretching out a 2 goal lead before Corrib responded to make it 2-1, then Clontarf scored another 2 before half time. In the third quarter Clontarf stretched out a lead eventually winning the game 10-4. Thanks to Corrib for a great match and the crowd were well entertained. A special thanks to all the supporters who came over to the NAC to support the teams. Thanks to Swim Ireland for hosting the competitions over the two days with over 180 children from 6 to 13 playing. Also thanks to the tournament director, the referees, the bench duty staff and the NAC staff for a well run event. We will be back next year to hopefully make it three in a row.
